261002 – Development update
Ridge lift on your phone, NOTAMs along your route and a planner rebuilt around the walk-out. The hill is calling.
This update covers work on the development branch since the 2 October production release. It will reach the app with the next production release.
⛰️ Ridge lift, live on the map
- Lift band and lee warning: the ridge layer now shows a lift band within about 5 km of you, worked out on your phone from the live wind and the terrain, together with an advisory lee warning (F1489, F1412).
- Keeps up with you: it recalculates when the wind changes by 2 m/s or 15°, or when you move 1 km. The work runs in the background, and the layer works offline.
- Only on a known wind: the lift band only appears when the wind is live. If the wind is stale or assumed, the band is hidden.
- Its own feature: the ridge layer is no longer tied to glide range. If the layer can’t load, it now tells you so (F655).
📋 NOTAMs for the route you’re planning
- Along your route: the planner fetches NOTAMs along your route and near your alternates, even for a route you haven’t saved yet (F1406).
- Up to date: the Layers sheet shows when NOTAMs were last refreshed, with a Refresh button beside it (F1406).
- Filter by type: on the planning map and in the walk-out NOTAM list you can filter by six NOTAM types. NOTAMs on your route are drawn more softly, so the map stays readable (F1406).
- UK NOTAMs: UK NOTAMs now carry their type, so they sort and filter correctly (F1406).
🗺️ Airspace decisions, one answer each
- One status per airspace: each airspace on your route has one status pill. Tap it and the options open in place (F1491).
- The map rail: a rail on the left of the planning map holds Aircraft and Departure buttons and an airspace button. The airspace button opens the airspaces your route crosses, where you can mark each one Approved or Fly over. These choices belong to that plan and also appear on the walk-out (F1428).
- Airspace preferences: in Route settings, a grid of chips replaces the old list of Avoid switches (F1477).
- Planning only: your airspace choices shape the plan. In-flight airspace alerts are unchanged (F1428).
🛬 Circuits on the map
- Standard UK circuit: the circuit overlay now draws a standard five-leg UK circuit, including the final approach (F302).
✈️ Details, redesigned
- Five cards: Details now has five cards: This flight, On board, Aircraft & load, Route settings and Filing. Each card shows its real values in one line, and its badge names whatever is missing. Tap the card and it opens at that field (F1477).
- The right fields for your aircraft: single-seat and two-seat gliders, motor gliders, powered aircraft and foot-launched aircraft each see the fields that apply to them (F1477).
- People and weight: each person on board has their own weight and seat. Masses are entered once and weight and balance reads them. You can add your own weight to your Profile, and another pilot’s weight only appears if they have chosen to share it (F1477, F1351).
- Easier entry: wide text boxes, wheel pickers for date and time, and one value column on every row. When you save, one question offers to keep the new figures for next time in your Profile or hangar. The calculations are unchanged (F1477).
🚶 The walk-out is your pre-flight summary
- Everything on one page: the walk-out shows your route, fuel, weight and balance, NOTAMs, weather, airspace, terrain, filing and acknowledgements as cards (F1354).
- Edit in place: the Fuel and weight and balance pages can be edited directly from the walk-out (F1354).
- Then fly: you acknowledge any serious issues on the walk-out itself. Fly now then starts the flight and takes you to the Fly map (F1354).
🧭 Plans and the planner, tidied
- Plans list: “+ Plan new flight” sits at the top of the Plan tab. Search finds plans by name, From or To, and each row shows the distance, departure time and aircraft (F1432).
- Swipe to delete: swipe a plan on the Plans list to delete it. You are asked to confirm, and you can undo (F1453).
- Flown plans move on: once a planned flight has landed, the plan leaves your planned lists. Plans dated in the past that you haven’t flown still show on the Fly tab (F1454, F1445).
- On the route map: a waypoint row in the tray now has Direct, Avoid and remove buttons. Small popups stay clear of the map controls (F1456, F1449).
- Aircraft: with several aircraft in your hangar, you choose from a compact select, and a newly saved aircraft becomes the plan’s aircraft (F1455, F1393).
- Clear navigation: Route, Details and Walk-out sit together in one track along the top, and Cancel is drawn as a stylised X. Back buttons say where they go. Cancel on a plan you never saved leaves nothing behind, a new plan never overwrites the last one you opened, and a reopened plan keeps its From and To (F1492, F1433, F1347, F1375).
- Readable buttons: cyan buttons use a darker label, so they are easy to read in light mode (F1452).
🛠️ Under the hood: smoother and sturdier
- Smoother map: working out which airspace matters to you now runs in the background, so the map stays responsive whilst you fly (F1290).
- Map delivery: map tiles and reference data are delivered more reliably when our services restart. Reference data packs, including power lines and low-flying sensitive areas, publish through it (F987, F739, F1316).
🔒 Security
- Dependencies: we’ve applied security updates across the app, glasses and web dependencies, as part of our ongoing work to keep the platform current (F1494).
🔭 Coming next
- Download a whole flight for offline use from the walk-out, with an honest size estimate first (F1400).
- Ridge lift in the briefing as well as on the map, starting with UK ridges (F1412).
- Waypoints and Airspace cards on Details, using the same words as the Fly screen (F1491).
- Start a plan by scanning a QR code, and share a route with a link (F1429).
